Competition Details
For advanced piano, string, and voice students of ARMTA members. Two winners will be chosen, and each chosen winner of this Provincial Multidiscipline Competition must be prepared to represent the province of Alberta in the CFMTA Multidiscipline Competition July 14-16, 2027 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia as part of the CFMTA/FCAPM Conference The runner up must be prepared to replace one of the winners, should circumstances make it impossible for one of the winners to compete at the CFMTA Multidiscipline Competition.

Eligibility
1. The ARMTA Provincial Multidiscipline Competition is open to piano, string, and voice competitors who are
- Canadian citizens or legal residents of Canada, and who are living in Alberta
- instrumentalists who have not reached their 25th birthday by January 1, 2027
- vocalists who have not reached their 33rd birthday by January 1, 2027
- students of an ARMTA member in good standing, at the time of application and competition
- NOT previous 1st place winner of a CFMTA National Competition
3. ARMTA Provincial Multidiscipline Competition General Repertoire Requirements
- Repertoire must be at a senior concert level or higher.
- String musicians and pianists may select movements from a sonata; the entire work need not be performed.
- Repertoire substitutions are not permitted once the application is received; the performance order must be confirmed by February 20, 2027.
- Memorization is strongly recommended.
- Competitors must provide scores and/or legal copies for the judges, a second set of scores and/or legal copies will be required in the case of collaborators.
4. General Timing Information
- Stage time is defined as the time between the first note of the performance and the last note of the final selection.
- An official timekeeper is required. If the time limit is reached, the timekeeper will continue timing, and the competitor will be allowed to finish their entire program. The competition facilitator will confirm the timing before the final deliberation takes place and will inform the adjudicators of any overtime performances. The official timing of the competitor’s program will be recorded on the adjudication sheet, with suggested point deductions to competitors who went over-time.
Video Application Information
A link (YouTube, Google, etc.) to applicant’s unedited performance of the following is to accompany the application.
- Competitors in the ARMTA Video Application should present a stylistically balanced program. Repertoire should be chosen carefully to reflect the experience and maturity of the student.
- While it need not be professionally recorded the quality should not compromise the integrity of the performance.
- Participants should record their program in one session continuously.
- The overall programme must contain 25 to 30 minutes of stage time.
Program Requirements
- String musicians’ and pianists’ programs must include:
- One Canadian composition
- One major composition from the Baroque or Classical Period
- A variety of shorter works to form a well-balanced program
- Vocalists’ programs must include:
- One Canadian composition
- One operatic or oratorio aria
- A variety of shorter works to form a well-balanced program
Three pianists, three string musicians, and three vocalists will be selected from the Video Application to proceed to the Final in-person competition.
Final Round – Live Performance Information
- Competitors in the ARMTA Provincial Final in-person competition should present a stylistically balanced program. Repertoire should be chosen carefully to reflect the experience and maturity of the student.
- A completely new program must be presented. Competitors are wise to include a work by a Canadian composer in order to be eligible for a special prize in that category.
- The overall programme must contain 30 to 45 minutes of stage time.
Deadlines and Application Procedures
- ARMTA Provincial Multidiscipline Competition Video Application will open November 1, 2026 and close December 31, 2026.
- Winning competitors will be notified by January 15, 2027. Final in-person competition will take place in Red Deer, February 2027.
- Applications will be accepted using the online form only.

Application Fee ($30.00) payment options are on the application form, for all video applications. There is no additional fee charged for those promoted to the final, in person round.

List of Repertoire, in order of performance, for both video application and Final programs, including Title (complete), Composer (first and last name), performance time of each piece

Prizes and Awards
Generous prizes are made possible through the continuing support of the ARMTA Recognition Fund.
1st Place (two winners): $1000 for each winner from the ARMTA Recognition Fund. An additional $1000 to each winner from the ARMTA Recognition Fund after representing ARMTA in the CFMTA Multidiscipline Competition.
Runner up: $750 from the ARMTA Recognition Fund.
ARMTA Best Performance of a Canadian Work: $500 from the ARMTA Recognition Fund

Thelma Johannes O’Neill Prize: $250 awarded to the first place winner.
NOTE: The winners who represent ARMTA at the CFMTA Competition must each pay an entry fee of $250.
