The Betty Phelan Memorial Piano Scholarship, initiated by Carol MacKinnon-Hagan recognizes and honours Betty’s life and her dedication and commitment to the music community of Edmonton, Alberta. Betty, as a well-known piano teacher in Edmonton taught hundreds of students over her nearly 60-year career. Her enthusiasm and passion for music was a gift that she took great joy in sharing with so many. Betty, as a much beloved teacher, will long be remembered by all those who studied with her, many of whom have gone on to their own careers in music.
Description
- One award of $1,000 will be awarded annually
- Scholarship will be awarded for the study of piano
- Scholarship is administered by the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA)
- Funds are held by the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Associations (CFMTA) Trust
Eligibility requirements
- This scholarship is a “needs-based” scholarship when the applicant’s financial need restricts their ability to pursue piano music study.
- The scholarship is open to all residents of Alberta studying piano.
Required Documentation
- Description of music interest, hopes, plans, and experiences.
- Proposed plan of future study.
- Description of financial need.
- Any other financial help you have received.
- Two reference letters: They may be from your piano teacher, an ARMTA teacher, school music teacher, music association or colleague.
